We should not use nuclear power by Hiroko

              There was a big nuclear accident a few years ago in Japan. Nuclear accidents happened many times around the world including Japan. These accidents have caused a great deal of damage. In my opinion, we should not use nuclear energy. The first reason is that nuclear accidents happen repeatedly. The second reason is that radiation has bad effects on people for many years.

              The first reason is that nuclear accidents happen repeatedly. There are nuclear accidents around the world some times. The nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, the Three Mile Island nuclear power accident and the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant were representative examples. Kenzaburo Oe (2011) argues "Nuclear disaster seems a distant hypothesis, improbable; the prospect of it is, however, always with us." A nuclear accident goes on around the world. Every time a nuclear accident happens, many people feel pain. There is a fear that another nuclear accident will happen somewhere. It is a pity that we repeat nuclear accidents. We cannot prevent making a mistake and a disaster.

              The second reason is that the radiation has bad effects on people for many years. Some people have leukemia and some people get cancer of the thyroid in the future because of radiation. According to Jon Boyle (2011), "The world's worst civilian nuclear disaster, Chernobyl has also been blamed for thousands of deaths due to radiation-linked illness." Radiation causes DNA damages. It is very awful. When a pregnant woman or a baby is exposed to radiation, radiation has more bad effect for them than an adult. We are also exposed to radiation by polluted foods by radiation. Fish and meet are concentrated radiation because of food chains. Being lost the radioactive materials needs many years. The radioactive materials remain in the soil for many years. We cannot make farm products there and live near that the accidents happened because the radioactive materials have bad effect to us.

              We should not use nuclear energy. The first reason is that nuclear accidents happen repeatedly. The second reason is that radiation has bad effects to people for many years. We don't know when a nuclear accident will happen. I saw people who felt pain and grudge because of the nuclear accident and I felt sad. I want not to see the people. I hope a peaceful life without nuclear energy. The time comes when we decide not to use nuclear energy.
